ActiveH Customers Scoop CIH Awards (12/11/2007)
Ashram HA and Calico Housing have scooped top accolades at the UK Housing awards 2007
Ashram Housing Association has won a double award at this years awards for helping over 300 women find refuge from Domestic Violence.
Central Birmingham based Ashram won the national category for delivering culturally sensitive support solutions and the overall award for ‘Outstanding Achievement’ for England at the UK Housing Awards, presented by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and Inside Housing Magazine.
The double-award follows ground-breaking work by Ashram to tackle the hidden problem of domestic violence within the Asian community.
Ashram, part of the Accord/Matrix partnership has also produced a series of training and awareness DVDs about the issue. Ashram has dealt with 2,250 cases over the past three years and helped to provide safe homes for 300 woman subjected to domestic violence.
"This award is a tribute to the staff who have worked tirelessly to help women and families facing domestic violence in the communities of Birmingham and beyond", commented Amanda Nicholls (Ashram Deputy Chief Executive).
Paul Diggory, CIH President and Chair of the judging panel, said: “The UK Housing Awards celebrate the great work and achievements of housing organisations. Ashram is a deserving winner for its innovative and culturally sensitive work on such a difficult, taboo topic.”
Burnley based LSVT Calico Housing scooped the UKHA inspirational colleague award for Yasmin Riaz.
The Award was presented by inspiring multi-medal winning paralympic athlete Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson.
Yasmin was praised for organising high profile events to unite her local community.
