Housing Plus Group held its Blue Carpet Awards
Staff going out of their way to support vulnerable customers were among the ‘stars’ recognised at an inaugural awards event for a Staffordshire housing provider.
Housing Plus Group, based at Acton Gate, held its Blue Carpet Awards to celebrate the talent and achievements of colleagues from across the housing group.
Housing coordinators supporting people affected by the bedroom tax to downsize, directors who have established new and successful businesses to provide housing and care for older people and teams that have pulled together to transform services – were amongst the worthy winners at the awards.
Staff nominated colleagues who they felt had gone above and beyond their day-to-day job to live the Group’s values. After more than 250 nominations there were 60 finalists in the running for eight awards.
The Employee of the Year Award was won by Karl Fleary, from Wednesbury, who is a management accountant in the Group’s finance team. Karl, who was also shortlisted for a national award earlier this year, was praised by the judges for his outstanding commitment and professionalism in supporting the business to achieve its goals in innovative ways.
Team of the Year award was handed to the staff of extra care scheme Vine Court, at Cannock, who judges recognised had been on an inspirational journey. The scheme had seen a lot of change in managers and staff but the team have worked together to transform their morale and team attitude.
Judge Ursula Bennion, Director of Business Development, said: “There has been a seismic change at Vine Court. The staff at the scheme are clearly living the business values day in, day out to ensure they are continually improving services.”
The Unsung Hero of the Year was awarded to Andrew Sledge, who works tirelessly with his colleagues in the income support team to support customers with financial support and to ensure people are accessing the benefits they are entitled to.
Head of Housing, Rachel Chudley, who has led the Housing Team through the Government’s changes to the welfare benefits system and the threats those pose to the organisation and its customers, won Inspirational Leader of the Year and her colleague Sam Allcott, income Management Team Leader, scooped Outstanding Achiever of the Year.
Other winners included Julie Bellingham for Learner of the Year and Sushil Mahey, Customer Service Champion of the Year.
A special Chair’s Award was presented by Chair of Housing Plus Group Dr Mary Griffiths to recognise outstanding leadership in the business. This was awarded to Assistant Director for Care and Support, Jo Grainger, who has developed and successfully grown Care Plus – a leading provider of older people’s housing and support services.
Speaking at the awards, chair of Housing Plus Group, Dr Mary Griffiths, said: “These awards showcase just how much Housing Plus Group and its colleagues truly embody the values of the group. We have seen real examples of people building trust amongst customers and colleagues, staff focussing on our customers’ needs and developing services to meet those, learning and developing themselves to generate business outcomes and people injecting passion into everyday jobs because they truly believe in our mission and vision to improve the lives and homes of our customers.”
Long-serving staff member Tony Snell was also handed a special award for lifetime services to Housing Plus. Tony is retiring after almost 25 years of work since starting working for the council in 1989.
